Movie Review
Stephen King ______langoliers
Intro
This movie rates amongst the better
suspense mystery films I have ever seen.
What is it about this film that makes
it so appealing?
Perhaps it was the producers attempt to
keep true to the books format. Whatever that may be.
The characterisation of actors is
quality scored.
I have always loved that mystery
thriller who dunnit where the rain is pouring outside and your
indoors with the characters whom you seem to know or would like to
know.
This film contains all the elements you
need in a film to keep you enthralled and captivated where you seem
to be just another cast member stumbling upon the same problems who
draw possible solutions to a threatful situation.
The film narrates how the fate of
strangers travelling on a plane are destined to intertwine with
eachothers lives with an apparent mystery disappearance of near all
the plane's crew.
I don't know if you have ever came
across stared gazed in a situation where you felt the urge to comment
about something you wtinessed to a complete stranger, it is something
natural, primal and reminds me of children in a playground with no
cares in the world except for the trivial ones they have around
them.
In the case of the film it is was a
twilight zone event that forced the surviving strangers to join
together and figure out the mystery of the strange disappearance of
most of the plane's crew with their apparent belongings they wore or
had contained in their bodies were dispersed amongst what was left
over.
All had came from different backgrounds
and different situations and now they only had what is most common to
them now. Their impending doom.
We have the pilot, the british
operative, the wise and intuitive blind girl, the maniac businessman
with a past, a mystery novel writer and a reform addict and a casual
nice guy with glasses, a trade worker and a traveler looking for
love.
Each having their own talents, having
their own gift they used to help eachother out of a mysterious
conundrum that lies in front of them.
A great film makes you feel apart of
the film, it keeps you in this suspense struck right from the
beginning which the producers have successfully kept this level of
suspense and thrill not with predictability but with twist and bounds
that only add more to the suspense layer upon layer peeled away as
you progress through this film.
The little blind girl tantalises us
with brilliant flashes of premonitions.
The british operative is the tough guy
handling the heavy weighty bits.
The mystery writer logically puts
together all the pieces.
The guy with glasses wittingly finds
last minute solutions to a predicament when they have eventually
landed at an airport and find it completely desserted. Only to have
more questions raised.
Movies theorising on the nature of
space and time and a plane apparently having entered a time rift
while in flight, is something that adds to the novelty of this film.
It is no longer a flight merely
travelling from one destination to another, but a flight that had
traverses space and time and so you imagination is simply flowing
with speculations whilst these great characters go about solving the
problem which you go away feeling, I won;y give it away, but charged
and motivated.
The simplicity of the film gets me. No
special effects but simple and effective ques.
There is nothing more powerful than a
empty airport and a reality that does not look what it actually seems
that some sort of made up set with all sorts of fancy scenarios and
space wars sequence types events.
Nor a businessman with all the
hallmarks of a stephen king villain but with a twist in the film.
A pyschopath hell bent of reaching his
destination wit the constant childhood reminder of his abusive father
that the ______langoliers_____would get him because he was a lazy no do gooder.
Stephen king paints this person as a
more than likely everyday villain, living in the corporate world,
seemingly respected, what with a streak of violence and
unpredictability if things don't turn out his way.
The element of a dark villain character
who is unco operative in the group of survivors finding a way out and
who is somehow tied in with the whole fiasco is an expertly crafted
antidote to the unravelling of this enigma of a story.
The idea that a group of strangers all
with their own life stories, find a common problem that pales in
comparison with their own problems and then seek to unite, makes you
wonder as like a metaphorcial message of our lives, how we worry and
bicker over the most mundane and trivial issues of our life and when
something profoundly wrong and major comes along, those problems we
had paled in comparison and actually inspire you to solve your own
problems.
With the exception of the maniac
businessman who seeks success at any cost, even in a troubled
situation, he is unable to adapt and conform with other people in
finding a solution to a mystery that all effects them.
This movie attracts what is innate and
natural within all of us and this is apparent dropping of the guard
of strangers who different lives when faced with a life threatening
situation and co incidentally those few fateful moments changed their
lives forever thereafter.
