8th gate movie a disappointment and cowardly role play
aren't they the smart alecs.
beginning the good vs bad guy theme was not exactly how this movie pinned out to be
though structurally engaging and intriguing and unravelling throughout
johnny plays the book dealer and he is set on an assignment by an occult master to find the other compare his book to the other books in circulation.
the movie takes you on this mystery, intrigue and murder.
johnny's character emerges as a non relgiious figure when questioned his position relays his religion is his percentage. the drift of the movie distracts you from the neutral book dealer who soons finds himself engrossed into this intrigue and when he wanted out, fully understanding what he was involved with , he continued to do the bidding.
a demonic figure actually protects johnny and upon learning that the client is not the chosen to discover the secrets of the devil of which he hoped to understand on setting johnny towards his task, the movie infers johnny is the chosen since after the death of his client, still sought with his demonic accomplice towards discovering this mystery and a sex ritual with the demon occurs showcasing johnny is the man with the means to the secret.
I thought the movie was cowardly as johnny character almost type castes him into a hero figure who merely made the unfortunate decision to research these occult books for his rich devil worshipping client and then in the end follows him into the castle which the book led him and there sort to take from the client all the cryptic information discovered from all the 3 books which at first seemed to be forgeries but were actually all authentic and the mystery lied within all 3 books. the morale of johnny killing the client for killing his way to acquire all the other books [which he realised were a set and not forgeries as discovered and relayed in johnnys character] is negated by the fact he wanted this mystery for himself as inferred by the protecting demon on his shoulder.
knowing johnnies tendency towards the occult and his defence of murduring teens who were purportively involved in witchcraft and his antagonism of christianity through music duets causing controversy , one can see his inclination to these type of morbid roles that promote the occult.
no doubt this movie was not about good vs evil. but those that seek and sought it and it is disappointing that hollywood would make a movie that promoted this.
the movie producers understood they needed to be subtle in their occult implication as a movie divested fro mthe good vs evil formula is often not popular. however the cowardly double dip character he played attempted to hookwin the audience to support johnny;s character when he was a infact an occultist as well. this is a form of cowadly dishonest in the script , spineless script writing that is sometimes made today.
